I spent all day thinking about how pretty Jenny looked at the birthday party. Her dreamy gold flecks in her gaze sparkled in the morning sunlight. The green color of her airy dress brought out the green in her hazel eyes. It killed me not to kiss every freckle on her exposed shoulders. I’d craved to let my fingers get tangled up in her brunette curls as they blew in the warm June breeze. It was a herculean effort not to give us away, but Betty had the good sense to serve pitchers of mimosas at her brunch.

I drank about four of them before I became numb to my pining for Jenny. She had some errands she wanted to run after her matinee show, but she was supposed to be here around eight. As soon as she arrived, I intended to kiss every inch of her skin, letting her whole body get tangled around mine.

Sitting at the table in my kitchen, the table big enough for four felt empty without her face to admire. I was getting too used to looking up from my plate and seeing angelic starlight. Eating the tacos I made for dinner, I scrolled through my phone as a poor replacement of her company, but it helped the time pass. The mindless articles and silly games lulled me into a comatose state. My phone’s vibration made my half-closed eyes go wide again.

Had a strange evening, and I’m not sure if I’ll be much fun tonight. Sorry I can’t come over.

Something happened. I didn’t know what, but it was bad enough that she didn’t want me seeing her. While I tried to respect her space, I refused to leave her alone with her unhappy thoughts. I wanted to be with her for every bad day and long night. She didn’t have to hide away just to lick her wounds, not from me anyway.

I didn’t think as I cleaned up the kitchen and threw some spare clothes in a bag. Heading uptown, I ran my finger’s over Jenny spare key, gripping it between my worried fingers. I took the stairs to her second-story apartment two at a time, not wanting to waste any second I could spare. As I opened the door, I could hear the shower just shutting off.

It was hard to imagine that Oz and Betty once lived here. Betty had dressed the apartment in shades of greens, pink, and yellow gold. It had been like vibrant springtime, but Jenny had transformed the apartment with moody romantic shades. She left the strawberry wallpaper in the kitchen, but had painted the green living room a rich marine blue. Matching her curtains, her berry-colored couch was illuminated by a curved floor lamp floating over the only seating in the large living room. Authentic Audrey Hepburn movie posters were hung in glass frames over the long sofa.

Besides as white glass-door cabinet across the room, the Persian-style rug was the latest addition to the room. The navy rug was accented with a diamond patterns of red and cream.
